“Havelock officers turned in an attempt to catch up to the vehicle and had momentarily lost sight of the vehicle but continued toward N.C.101 whereupon they came upon the vehicle having been involved in an wreck near Alease Lane,” Cyrus said. “The vehicle had left the roadway and had struck a power pole and had overturned.”

Cyrus said the 2003 Saturn was on its top smoking, but not on fire, and the suspect was still inside, when police arrived.

“It did sever the power pole that it struck,” Cyrus said. “The individual crawled away from the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident.”

Dusty Bryan, owner of Sure Shot Gun Sports, said it was the first time his business had been broken into.

“The guy broke the window and got in and broke a couple more windows trying to get out,” Bryan said. “The alarm went off. One of the neighbors came by. He heard the alarm and came to investigate.”

Bryan said the neighbor had a brief confrontation with Smith.

“He yelled at the guy and he took off running, went to his car and took off,” Bryan said.
