Incumbent Havelock Commissioner Will Lewis has filed to run for mayor in the Nov. 5 city election.

Lewis will be challenging incumbent Jimmy Sanders, who filed his paperwork to seek election last week. Lewis filed on Tuesday afternoon.

Sanders faced a challenger in 2009 for city mayor and held back Chuck Bernard by 13 votes.

Sanders, a former city commissioner who had also served as mayor when elected in 1995, has been Havelock’s mayor since 2005 when he left his commissioner seat to run against Matthew Jones.

Lewis, who became the city’s youngest commissioner when elected in 2005 at the age of 28, had earlier said he was undecided about running for a third term as commissioner when the filing period opened on July 8.

Along with the position of mayor, two commissioner seats are also up for grabs in the upcoming election, the one currently held by Lewis and the other held by Jim Stuart.

Stuart, who had said early that he was leaning toward not running for re-election, filed to keep his commissioner seat on Thursday. Two other residents have filed to run for city commissioner, George Corbin and Brenda Wilson.
