A wintry combination of sleet, freezing rain and snow is expected to impact the Havelock area starting late Monday into Tuesday, according to forecasters.

Craven County Schools will be closed on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for what it expects will be two waves of wintry weather. The first is expected late Monday into Tuesday when rain is expected to change to snow and sleet and continue through Tuesday night.

A second wave is expected early Wednesday when sleet is expected before changing to rain.

The weather service says it has a high level of confidence with the forecast through Tuesday, with the heaviest amount of sleet and snow expected Tuesday afternoon. About 1 to 2 inches of accumulation is expected in the Havelock area.

No major accumulation is expected overnight Monday, but the weather service warns that driving conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout Tuesday, especially by the afternoon.

The weather service said changes in the exact track of a low pressure system could cause changes in the forecast for Wednesday, but that coastal regions, including the Havelock area, are expected to see mostly rain.
