“We had received information that indicated that a person we were interested in locating was at the apartment building so we responded units over there to determine whether that information was factual or not,” Cyrus said. “He was a person of interest who we were looking for. I’m not going to identify him as a suspect because we have not yet completed the interviews.”

Cyrus said Berry had a fiancé in the area and that his father was in the military and serving overseas. He said arrangements were being made for Berry’s father to return the United States.

At the time of his death, Berry was on probation for a Sept. 8, 2011, conviction of possession of a firearm by a felon and felony possession of marijuana, according to the N.C. Department of Corrections website.

Anyone with more information on the shooting can contact the Havelock Police Department at 447-3212. Those wishing to leave an anonymous tip can call 467-7115 or go online to www.havelocknc.us.
