Havelock police are trying to piece together the events that resulted in a shooting death Saturday morning at the Kelly Park Apartment complex on Shipman Road.

Demetri Shavar Berry, 28, died Saturday afternoon at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. He was shot once in the lower chest/upper abdomen area at around 10:24 a.m. Saturday at the complex, Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus said.

When police arrived at the scene, Berry was initially responsive at the foot of the first floor foyer area in front of apartment L-4, but Cyrus said Berry did not live in that apartment.

Cyrus said police are seeking a suspect but described him only as a black male.

He also said Berry’s death had not been classified as a homicide, as the investigation is continuing.

“We don’t know if it’s a murder yet,” Cyrus said. “We don’t know all the facts. We’re still going over the information provided by the witnesses. We’re not at a point yet to say that we have a murder.”

He said about a dozen witnesses had been interviewed.
