The Havelock News was recognized for excellence in journalism during the N.C. Press Association’s annual Winter Institute held Thursday in Chapel Hill.

The Halifax Media Group paper received 22 awards for weekly newspapers with a circulation up to 3,500, including second place for general excellence for websites.

Editor and General Manager Ken Buday won eight awards, reporter/photographer Drew C. Wilson won seven, and seven were staff awards.

“It’s cliché to say this is a team effort, but it really is,” Buday said. “Everyone here works so well together in an effort to provide Havelock and the surrounding areas the best newspaper and website we can, and of course our community is part of that. They allow us to come into their homes and tell their stories and take their pictures and take videos for our website. We truly appreciate them and all of our readers and advertisers who support our efforts to tell the world what’s going on in the Havelock and Cherry Point communities.”

The Havelock News won nine first-place awards, with Wilson winning for education reporting, sports feature photo and general news photography, and Buday winning for photo page, sports photography and arts and entertainment reporting. Three staff awards were for use of photographs, appearance and design, and editorial page.

The paper won nine second-place awards, with Buday earning honors for headline writing, sports feature photo and sports news reporting, and Wilson being recognized for photo page and general news photography. Staff awards were for overall news coverage, sports coverage, community coverage and general excellence for websites.

The paper had four third-place awards, with Wilson earning recognition in education reporting and arts and entertainment reporting, and Buday taking honors for sports feature photo and serious columns.
