The Havelock News received recognition as one of the top newspapers in the state during the N.C. Press Association’s annual Winter Institute held last week in Chapel Hill.
The paper received 24 awards in the association’s annual News, Editorial and Photojournalism contest for community newspapers with weekly circulation under 3,500, the most of any paper in its division.
The paper won second place for general excellence in newspaper websites and third place for general excellence for its print edition. The awards rate overall quality.
"I’m very proud of all the hard work by so many people who contribute to the quality of the Havelock News," said Ken Buday, editor and general manager. "There are so many people behind the scenes, and our readers don’t know their names, but they are the backbone of the paper and allow the editorial staff to provide the quality stories, features and photographs our readers have come to expect."
The Halifax Media Group paper earned nine first-place, seven second-place and eight third-place awards. Reporter Drew C. Wilson won 10 individual awards, while Buday had seven. The others were staff awards.
Wilson’s awards included news feature writing for a story on flight simulators, sports feature writing for a story on mud bog races, and arts and entertainment reporting for a profile on photographer Sarah Gould. He won two sports feature photo awards, two photo page awards, two photo feature awards and a general news photo award.
Buday won awards for photo page, sports photography, headline writing, editorials, sports columns, sports news and serious columns.
