A Havelock man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison on child pornography charges.

Brian Joseph Vancourt, 40, was sentenced for receipt of child pornography by Senior District Court Judge Malcolm J. Howard on Wednesday, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Vancourt was arrested in April of 2011 and originally was charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

According to the release, the police department in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the FBI detected Vancourt using a peer-to-peer network to acquire child pornography and to discuss “in explicit terms” his desire to engage in sexual acts with a 9-year-old child.

Investigators obtained a search warrant, and the State Bureau of Investigation along with the FBI and Havelock police executed a search of Vancourt’s home on McCotter Boulevard on April 26.

During the search, authorities found a vast collection of child pornography, including tens of thousands of images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, according to the release.

Vancourt was already on the state’s sex offense registry and had previously been subject to a military court martial for child pornography. He was discovered using the peer-to-peer network less than a year after his release from the military brig, according to the release.
