A Havelock grandfather has been arrested and charged with a sex crime involving a 4-year-old child.
Stephen Heidtman, 64, of 192 Brown Blvd., was arrested last week and charged with statutory sexual offense by an adult with a child.
Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus said the alleged offenses occurred in the late spring or early summer of 2012 at Heidtman’s home. He said Heidtman knew the alleged victim.
Cyrus said the Havelock office of the Craven County Department of Social Services notified Havelock police on Aug. 19 about a complaint from the child’s mother. He said police started an investigation that included interviews with the mother, the alleged victim and Heidtman. Based on the information that was developed during the interviews, Heidtman was arrested and charged, Cyrus said.
Heidtman has already had his first appearance in court and is being held in the Craven County Jail under a $500,000 bond.
Cyrus said the charges were a class B-1 felony, and if convicted, Heidtman could face up to 25 years in prison.
