Havelock High School teachers, administrators and students are in mourning after learning of the death of one of the school’s teachers on Friday.
Amanda Lawrence, a math teacher, had a medical emergency while at the school on Friday morning and later died.
According to a statement from Craven County Schools, Lawrence collapsed at the school and was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, where she died.
According to a school system alert phone call sent to Havelock High parents, the school will have extra counselors on hand when students and staff return to classes on Monday.
Midterm exams scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at the school have been postponed.
Havelock High’s scheduled junior varsity and varsity softball games at South Central Friday night were also postponed.
Lawrence, who was reportedly in her 30s, had worked at the school since 2002 and had most recently taught algebra 2, pre-calculus and advanced math, according to the statement from Craven County Schools.
“Mrs. Lawrence had been a valued member of the Havelock High School faculty since 2002,” according to the statement. “ … She was a dedicated teacher who cared about her students and colleagues. She will be greatly missed.”
