Havelock High School’s Class of 2014 was sent off with lofty goals in mind Saturday morning.

Diplomas were handed out to 228 seniors at commencement exercises held under sunny skies on the Ram football field.

“I am extremely proud of the Class of 2014 and I applaud their accomplishments during the last four years,” said Principal Jeffrey E. Murphy. “Havelock High is a great school and our students have worked hard to achieve in the classroom, on the field and the courts, on the stage and in numerous events and competitions. The class before me is filled with unique young people who possess a variety of talents, abilities and skills. Each of them has stayed the course toward the goal of graduation from high school and individually and collectively, they are an outstanding group of men and women.”

Salutatorian Nadiya V. Yerich told the class that this was the moment that they all had been waiting for since they first set foot in the school.

“I know that the last four years had been seemingly endless but we have now come to the end of our journey,” said Yerich.

“Over the past four years we have grown together as a class and I can only hope that it has been as enjoyable for you as it has been for me,” Yerich said. ”Today truly marks the end of a chapter in our lives, and the beginning of a new one. I hope that you all chose to live remarkable lives, shaping the people around you like we were shaped by the people who are around us today. Congratulations Class of 2014. May all of your futures be filled with opportunities and happiness.  We made it.”

Valedictorian Andrew J. Gumbel gave thanks to parents and teachers for their support over the years, then turned to a comedic approach in his address to the attendees.
