Annual T-shirt sale drive starts

This year the department is also selling hats along with the T-shirts. The cost is $20 for each and they are available by calling 444-6443 or visiting the Havelock West End Fire Station on U.S. 70 at the entrance to Tucker Creek. Residents can also visit the department’s Facebook page.

In a separate breast cancer awareness fundraiser, Havelock’s firefighters are joining with CarolinaEast to create a Pink Glove Dance Video for a competition sponsored by MEDLINE. The company manufactures pink rubber gloves that were worn in a video made Tuesday with members of the fire department. The winner of the video competition will receive a $25,000 donation to the charity of their choice.

“We chose Havelock Fire and Rescue because they have been so supportive of our foundation,” said Megan McGarvey, with CarolinaEast Medical Center. “They do the Brave Enough to Wear Pink and they sell the T-shirts and the proceeds actually come back to the CarolinaEast Foundation for our breast cancer research and education, so we thought that this was a perfect opportunity to partner and show Havelock Fire and Rescue how much we appreciate their ongoing support.”

The 90-second video will be submitted Oct. 4 to the competition, and the voting starts Oct. 28 and continues for two weeks.

“It’s one vote, per person for Facebook,” McGarvey said. “We’re really going to depend on the community for those votes. Whoever gets the most votes also gets $25,000 to go to the charity of their choice.”

The dance competition proceeds will be going to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
