For nonprofit groups with simple literature, the charge is $100.

Cooks are needed for chicken wings, green chili, red chili and salsa. The entry fee for chicken wings is $50, which is refundable, and $45 for green chili and red chili. Cooks are competing for nearly $3,000 in prize money.

The International Chili Society sanctions the festival as the official North Carolina chili cookoff, with the winner of the red chili, chili verde and salsa competitions eligible to represent the state in the 2014 ICS World Championship.

The Havelock Chili Festival raises money for area nonprofit organizations, with about $11,000 raised last year. The Easter Seals/Craven-Cherry Point Child Development Center, Coastal Women’s Shelter, Early College EAST, Annunciation Catholic School, Havelock High Band Boosters and the Cherry Point Young Marines stand to benefit from this year’s festival.

The festival is free to attend, and parking is also free.

“I want us to be a point of destination,” Duncan said. “I want us to be able to show people what this community has to offer because we do have a lot to offer.”

For more information, visit the Havelock Chamber of Commerce office inside the Havelock Tourist and Event Center, call the chamber office at 447-1101, go online to the festival website at www.chilifestival.org or email chili@chilifestival.org.
