Preparations for the 2013 Havelock Chili Festival are hot and heavy, with the unveiling of a new logo and a push for vendor and cook registration with less than a month to go before the deadline.

The festival, put on by the Havelock Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for Oct. 18 and 19 at Havelock City Park.

Shannon LuQuire with Trade Ideas, who also designed logos for the Havelock Tourist and Event Center and Craven County Schools, developed the new copyrighted festival logo, which features a spoon through the center of a flame display with the words Havelock Chili Festival.

“She really knows the Havelock community,” Stephanie Duncan, executive director of the chamber, said of LuQuire. “She was able to capture the essence of those other organizations she’s worked with and we feel confident she was able to do that with us. The new logo itself shows the enthusiasm people have for the chili festival.”

Duncan said the Havelock Chili Festival Committee, a volunteer group that plans the festival for 11 months, thought a new logo was needed.

“Every once in a while you have to rebrand yourself,” Duncan said. “You look at Walmart and how they took the dash out between wal and mart. Wendy’s changed the girl a little bit. Pepsi, that red and blue circle, you know that circle is Pepsi. Logos go through cycles and they have to be tweaked a little bit.

“When you see that fire and that spoon, you know immediately without anyone saying anything that it’s the Havelock Chili Festival. We want to and we strive to one day have people on the other side of the country see that logo and know that it’s the Havelock Chili Festival and to really stand out above the rest.”
