Havelock board to consider base support issues at meeting

The Havelock Board of Commissioners will look at support of Cherry Point during its meeting on Monday night.

The board is expected to discuss release of $10,000 in support of the Allies for Cherry Point’s Tomorrow lobby group. The city put the money into its 2013-14 budget but held the money in reserve, pending other potential funding sources for ACT. According to the city, ACT is expected to receive $80,700 from the state as well as $57,200 from other local governments, including Craven County, Carteret County, Jones County and New Bern.

ACT plans to use the money to support its lobbying efforts to protect the base as well as base employees from job cuts and a possible Base Realignment and Closure process.

Also on Monday, commissioners are expected to discuss expansion of the role of its hired lobbyist, Franklin Partnership, as it relates to regional and state cooperation for protection of Cherry Point. The lobbyists are under contract with the city through the end of the year, and the expansion of that role to include base protection efforts would cost $950 per month or a total of $3,800 through the end of the contract.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Havelock City Hall.
