Havelock residents awoke this morning to a field of white, as a combination of sleet and snow covered the area from a winter storm.
Roads were covered in the mixture, and though crews had plowed U.S. 70, it remained icy. Neighborhood streets and side roads were covered, and some smaller two-wheel drive vehicles had gotten stuck, tires spinning away as drivers attempted to free themselves.
As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, snow was exiting the area, leaving behind occasional flurries.
The area remained under a winter storm warning but that was expected to expire later in the afternoon.
Heavy sleet fell overnight, producing about about an inch or more of accumulation, before the snow moved in, dumping another inch.
Craven County Schools were closed Wednesday and Thursday, and Cherry Point closed at noon Tuesday. Only personnel designated by their supervisors were required to work Wednesday. Non-designated personnel are expected to return to work by noon on Thursday. Updates from Cherry Point are available by calling 466-3093.
The system moved in with freezing rain and ice Tuesday, forcing many residents to pound away at their cars to clear their windows.
“It’s a nuisance,” Stephen French said as he cleared his truck of ice.
Road or bridge closure information is available through the Department of Transportation online at www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel/ or by dialing 511 from any phone and following the prompts.
The snow and ice will likely stick around with high temperatures today expected in the upper 20s and a low temperature of 12 degrees predicted for Wednesday night. However, a warming trend follows, as highs Friday will reach near 50 degrees, followed by near 60-degree temperatures Saturday and Sunday.
