Furloughs of civilian employees at Cherry Point began this week, affecting some departments and operations.
Most of the 850 base employees affected will be taking their required day off with no pay on either Mondays or Fridays, according to base officials. Officials said those conducting business on base should realize some areas could be understaffed on Mondays and Fridays and are asking that business be conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The furloughs last through September.
The furloughs also affect roughly 3,300 workers at the Fleet Readiness Center East aircraft repair and maintenance facility.
As for base operations, the Pass and ID office at the main gate will operate on reduced hours from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to base officials. Other areas affected include the Naval Health Clinic, Marine Corps Community Services and Facilities Maintenance.
The base commissary will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
The furloughs do not impact the Cherry Point fire and police departments. The air station’s dining facilities will operate on a normal schedule, and there will be no change to hours at any of the base’s gates.
