A fire destroyed a van owned by Carolina Cab Wednesday afternoon in Havelock.

Driver Don Daugherty said he had just dropped off a customer near 110 Lynnwayne Circle when he noticed smoke coming from the vehicle.

“I was coming down the driveway and the cab started filling up (with smoke),” he said. “I thought it was steam at first. I got out and opened the hood and it took a couple of seconds to see where it was coming from.

“It didn’t start flaming up until I got all my stuff out of the cab. I just got away from the cab and stood by a tree until another cab showed up.”

The Havelock Fire Department was called at 1:42 p.m. but the flames destroyed the van in minutes. The fire was under control by 1:50 p.m., but by then the damage had been done.

Daugherty was not injured.

“I’ve been running that cab all day,” he said. “I made an airport run with it. It went up real quick.”
