Fight at high school results in injuries to teachers

An early-morning fight among students at Havelock High School resulted in injuries to two teachers.

The fight broke out shortly after 7:30 a.m. Thursday, and the two teachers were injured while attempting to break up the fight, according to Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus.

Cyrus said both teachers, Tom Battista and Bill Styron, were treated and released.

Jennifer Wagner, spokeswoman for Craven County Schools, said the fight started in the cafeteria as students gathered before the start of classes.

Cyrus said the fight involved three students, ages 14 and 15, so their names could not be released. He said Havelock police were working with juvenile services, with petitions expected to be issued against the students for the fight.

Cyrus said he was not certain what prompted the altercation, though he said police received a call about a possible fight involving the same individuals Wednesday afternoon outside of school. He said when officers arrived, they were unable to determine what activity had been taking place.

“It could be a carryover from that,” Cyrus said.
