Ferry across Neuse River is back on schedule

Chief Engineer Elbert Jones said that about three inches of ice and snow had fallen on the ferries through the storm and it all had to be removed before operations could be restarted.

“Maintenance cleaned them off yesterday. They beat it with a rubber hammer and sprayed it with the fire hose and used shovels,” Jones said.

The ferries Neuse and Lupton were making runs on the normal schedule on Friday.

Bettie Sue Purifoy is one of the crew members on the Lupton.

“Now we got to deal with the fog and it looks like it is pretty thick,” Purifoy said during the 8:30 a.m. crossing Friday morning. “We go from one extreme to the other.”
