Craven County Schools has announced a two-hour delay for Tuesday morning for all students and staff.

In a statement, the school system listed forecasted weather and potentially hazardous conditions as the reason for the two-hour delay.

An artic cold front swept through the area Monday, dropping temperatures by 10 to 15 degrees in a matter of minutes. Predicted low temperatures for tonight and Tuesday morning are expected to be around 15 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Newport. The high temperature on Tuesday is expected to be 29.

The weather service has issued a wind chill advisory through 10 a.m. Tuesday with the potential for wind chills at or below zero. The weather service advises that such conditions could produce frostbite to exposed areas of skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Winds are predicted to blow at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

The cold temperatures could cause water pipes to bursts, and homeowners are urged to leave water dripping from their faucets.

For those who must be outside, the weather service recommends to dress in layers with a coat, hat and gloves.
