Community, church and school officials have come together to raise money to help offset the medical expenses of a Havelock High School student.
The Glenn Poole Celebration has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Havelock High School.
"It started out as just a couple of the Methodist churches, and then it just grew," Havelock Principal Jeff Murphy said. "Then the Ministerial Association got involved. We have MALS-14 helping out."
Marine Air Logistics Squadron 14 from Cherry Point adopted Havelock High last year through the Adopt-A-School program.
Poole, a Havelock High senior, was on a field trip Sept. 27 when he went into the water at Fort Macon and nearly drowned. Fellow students and a teacher helped rescue him and performed CPR until rescue personnel arrived.
He spent 12 weeks recovering at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville and continues treatment and rehabilitation toward a recovery.
"He has come a long way," Murphy said of Poole’s recovery.
Despite insurance, the family has incurred many expenses toward treatment and recovery.
The event will include a 5K run, walk-a-thon and a cornhole tournament. Area churches will have hotdogs, hamburgers, french fries, funnel cakes and other items available for purchase.
The cost of admission or to participate in the walk-a-thon is $10 for adults and $5 for school-age children. Participants can walk on the school track as long as they wish.
Preregistration for both the 5K run and the cornhole tournament is $20 each. Event-day registration is $25 and is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the 5K run as well as the cornhole tournament.
Tickets are for sale and preregistration is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during normal school hours at Havelock High School.
Those wishing to make donations to the family can mail checks to Havelock High School, 101 Webb Blvd., Havelock, NC 28532. Checks should be made payable to Havelock High School and include Glenn Poole Celebration in the subject line. All proceeds go to directly the Poole family.
According to a release on the event, Poole’s father is thankful for prayers and support from all across the country.
