A shopper leaving the Havelock Walmart had her car erupt in flames Wednesday afternoon.

The fire started just after 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The driver and owner of the 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Edna Smith, of Havelock, was uninjured.

"I came out of the store, put my key in the ignition and started to back out and there was smoke coming out," Smith said. "It scared me because the flames started shooting out so fast."

She said the vehicle she normally drives had broken down and that she had been driving the Oldsmobile for about three weeks.

Havelock Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire in about a minute, but the car was heavily damaged. The exact cause wasn’t determined but the fire appeared to start from under the hood.

No other vehicles were damaged from the fire.
