A longtime state legislator from Carteret County is in the hospital in Connecticut after experiencing a fall.
Sen. Jean Preston, R-Emerald Isle, was visiting friends when she sustained a serious fall, the family said.
Preston’s colleague and friend, Rep. Pat McElraft, also from Emerald Isle, provided a statement from the family, which denies some media reports that Preston had a heart attack.
“Senator Preston did not have a heart attack. She had a very nasty fall while visiting friends out of state and is in the hospital recovering,” the statement reads. “The family will keep you updated as to her progress. Please remember her in your prayers.”
Preston, 77, who has served 20 years in the General Assembly, is in the final days of her last term in the N.C. Senate representing Carteret, Craven and Pamlico counties. She chose not to seek re-election in 2012.
Norman Sanderson, a Republican from Pamlico County who has served in the N.C. House, will be sworn into Preston’s seat on Sunday.
