Alligator attack kills dog in Jacksonville

An alligator attacked and killed a dog in Jacksonville Tuesday evening.

Jacksonville officials say a woman was walking her dog on River Street and the dog ran into the Henderson Green area by the water near Northwoods Shopping Center. After a brief period of time, an alligator took the dog.

Wildlife officials are expected to be in the area searching for the alligator and, possibly, attempting to relocate it.

City officials say that people tend to feed the ducks in the area and the alligators are drawn to the ducks. They are asking residents not to feed the ducks near the water.

Alligators feed at dawn and dusk, they said. The attack happened around dusk.

The incident comes about a month after two alligators were spotted in a branch of Slocum Creek in the Foxcroft area in Havelock. City officials here have warned residents about the presence of the gators and are telling residents not to feed them, as the animals would soon associate people with food and could increase the potential for an attack.
