The Department of Defense announced Thursday the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. Jacob M. Hess, 22, of Spokane, Wash., died Wednesday during combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Hess was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 26, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune.

Hess’ death is under investigation. Hess was deployed with Marine Air Logistics Squadron 40, 2nd Marine aircraft Wing (Fwd). Hess entered the Marine Corps on Oct. 25, 2010.

He is the first reported military death in 2014.
