Two wrecks send five people to hospitals

Two wrecks within 15 minutes of each other on opposite sides of Havelock Wednesday sent five people to the hospital.

The first crash involved three cars and happened around 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 70 and Slocum Road. One lane of westbound U.S. 70 was blocked, and traffic backed up on both roads.

As of Thursday morning, a report from Havelock police on the cause of the crash was unavailable.

At least two people were transported to Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. Their conditions were not available, but their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Two of the vehicles involved came to rest in the road, while a blue compact car slid off the road into a ditch, where rescue personnel were tending to the victims.

The second crash happened around 5 p.m. at the intersection of McCotter Boulevard and U.S. 70 Wednesday. The wreck sent three people to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City. The extent of their injuries was unavailable.

As of Thursday morning, a report from Havelock police on the cause of the crash was unavailable.

Ok, so this morning I am taking my son to school.....accident at this intersection. This afternoon we were headed home after work, this wreck occurs. We were in traffic for 30 minutes. I am not complaining about that, far from it. I certainly hope that the people involved are ok. That being said, is there anyone else who may oppose doing SOMETHING for this intersection? The flyover would be a Godsend at this point.

Although a large proportion of individual involved in these accidents are affiliated in one way or the other with the Federal Government, the Government should not foot the bill for the mistakes levied upon us by the NCDOT. The NCDOT could rectify many of the traffic ills associated with Havelock and its road system, but they would rather waste taxpayer’s dollars with the Super 70 Project and a faster route to the beach. If the NCDOT concentrated only a portion of its efforts on the Eastern portion of the state, we might see roads like the ones around Raleigh, Durham and the Triangle.
