Crash leaves motorcyclist in critical condition

A Newport man remains in critical condition after a crash involving his motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle early Sunday morning.

The wreck happened at 2:16 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 70 and Stonebridge Trail.

David Ferdinand Johnson, 48, was traveling east on U.S. 70 on his 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he collided with a 1997 GMC Jimmy driven by Diane Maiko Olivera, 21, of New Bern, according to a release.

Diane Miller, Havelock spokeswoman, said the initial investigation by Havelock police shows Olivera made a left turn across eastbound U.S. 70 in front of the path of the motorcycle.

According to the release, speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

Johnson was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was listed in critical condition. Olivera was not injured.

According to Miller, the crash is still under investigation. Havelock police have not been able to speak with Johnson because of his injuries.

No charges have been filed.

I remember back in the early 90's a similiar thing happened at the same intersection and they said a traffic light would deter this sort of thing... Guess not...

Seems like stop lights around here are like a "dare" to too many people. Just watch the cars fly through a light that has already turned red. Or cars that turn out right in front of you, knowing there is not room. They don't care. Put people behind the wheel of a vehicle and they go brain dead and lose all regard for anyone else. Of course everyone is not like that, but too many are. It's a wonder more people are not killed in accidents. Prayers to the injured motorcyclist for his recovery.

I hope your comments are looking for shock value and not a real representation of your views. If you really feel this way, I hope you leave this great land we have of mixed ethnicities and races and find the land Hitler dreamed of and you obviously desire. You could allways resort to his method of escape and shoot yourself to find it.

I use that light several times a day, and it is a death trap awaiting for a time to spring. It is dangerous to use that intersection regardless of the time of day. Whoever decided to remove the Ketner light needs to remove themselves from our town. There are to many people trying to enter the highway from a single location. Not to mention the three way stop signs on both sides of the intersection, a motel, Hams Restraunt, professional offices, stores, tire and auto repair shops, a day care, ...etc to add more traffic and confusion to the mix.

This is one of the most dangerous intersection in Havelock, and the Havelock City Commissioners, Mayor and NCDOT made it that away. All in the name of progress,and Super 70. We can also thank the idiotic thinking of regional and local highway engineers and planners. But wait, the by-pass coming in 2015 will solve many of these problems. So they say.
