Local Girl Scout Destiny Oakley has been selected for the high achievers club for selling more than 5,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies.

Since she began selling cookies nine years ago, Oakley has sold 5,197 boxes, including 1,008 boxes this past year.

Oakley, who is a member of Girl Scout Troop No. 581 in the North Carolina Coastal Pines division, is the daughter of Jonathan and Tori Oakley.

The Coastal Pines division includes more than 35,000 members in 41 counties. This year, the Coastal Pines division sold 3.4 million boxes of cookies with more than 14,000 Girl Scouts participating in the program. About 1,700 girls sold more than 400 boxes of cookies each, while 227 girls sold 1,000 or more boxes each. Council-wide the typical Girl Scout sells an average of 216 boxes of cookies.

The program raises money for the Girl Scouts and helps girls develop time management, money and people skills.

The 2013 Girl Scout cookie sale program kicks off Jan. 5.
