The Havelock Community Emergency Response Team has schedule basic training classes beginning next week.

Classes are scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Feb. 20 and Feb. 21, with an additional class scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 22.

The purpose of CERT is to help residents be prepared for disasters and be in a position to offer assistance to neighbors.

The classes will help participants learn emergency preparedness and acquire skills in fire safety, emergency medical techniques, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and terrorism. The Feb. 22 class will be a review, test and hands-on applications of the skills learned.

There is no cost for the classes and no obligation to the city.

In the past, Havelock CERT members have helped residents after hurricanes and also participated in searches for missing people, and have been a part of events such as National Night Out and the Cherry Point Air Show.

For more information or to register for the classes, contact Stacy Engel, Havelock CERT director, at the Havelock Police Department at 447-3212 ext. 3115 or by cell at 229-4524 or by email at hcert@havelocknc.us.
