W.J. Gurganus Elementary School in Havelock is seeking votes in an online contest to win money to purchase a new playground.
The contest is being held through U.S. Cellular, and the winning schools can receive $25,000 toward building a new playground. Schools that place in the top 20 will receive funds, and as of Tuesday, Gurganus Elementary was ranked No. 34.
To vote, residents can go online to the U.S. Cellular website at www.uscellular.com and click on the Calling All Communities tab or go directly to http://callingallcommunities.dachisdev.com. Voters will be asked to enter an email address and then will receive an email from U.S. Cellular with a link to complete the voting process.
The playground at the elementary school is more than 20 years old. The wooden structure is weathered and in poor shape and includes metal slides that can’t be used in hot weather because of the risk of burns, according to information from parents who entered the school in the contest.
Voting in the contest ends on Sunday.
