Letter: Urge commissioners to fund library

Published: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 03:59 PM.

The Havelock-Craven County Public Library needs your help!

At a June meeting, the Havelock city commissioners voted on their budget. This budget did not contain any funding for our library. For many years, Havelock has paid 35 percent of the library budget and Craven County contributed 65 percent. The county commissioners have refused to sign a memorandum of understanding with Havelock regarding this 65/35 budgetary split. This problem is now affecting our library by the reduction in hours open to the public.

It is time to contact our commissioners and urge them to resolve this issue. If you can only write one email or one letter or make one phone call, contact Scott Dacey, the Craven County Board of Commissioners chairman. If you have more time, contact them all with your questions and concerns.

Contact for Craven County commissioners is available at www.cravencountync.gov/boards/commissioners.cfm. Contact for Havelock commissioners is available at www.havelocknc.us/government/board-of-commissioners.

Please remember that our library is a meeting place for community groups and individuals. It houses the new Smart Start collection of items for children. It provides free internet access for those who need it. It allows the public to send and receive faxes. It is a vast resource of information, etc., etc.

Please spread the word about this situation to friends, family, and neighbors living in Havelock and Craven County.

Luann Rottmann, corresponding secretary, Friends of the Havelock-Craven County Public Library
