Letter: There are reasons to vote for new leadership

As a Havelock taxpayer and having lived here since 1962, I am very interested in what is going to happen to Havelock in the future.

I go to commissioners meetings and ask questions. Sometimes I complain, like I have done since our house became part of the city.

I’m complaining again because none of my complaints have been handled by the city. I tell them they have given us no service in all the years except water and sewer that we always had without the city.

The two properties across the street and the one next door are still eyesores, fire hazards and snake pits, and the answer I repeatedly get is “we’ll look into it.” There is an ordinance that helps the city look nice and demands the owner maintain their properties.

Members of the board take notice. I’m hoping a new mayor and commissioners will do their jobs and enforce ordinances instead of worrying about only what the people visiting or driving past can see.

Yes, those areas do look good, but my taxes for the city are as high as the county, and the county pays for health care and many other things that the city here does not. We pay for tourists’ pleasure as the board sees it, not what we have to look at.

So, that’s why I’m so vocal about why we must go out to vote for new leadership that will realize that shortcuts and excuses will not be tolerated year after year.
