Letter: Socialization during meals important for seniors

Published: Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 12:54 PM.

I would like to address the comment made by (Craven County Board of Commissioners) Chairman Scott Dacey in the Havelock News June 20 about taxpayers paying for seniors to "socialize" at congregate meal sites.

These seniors are also taxpayers and probably have paid taxes longer than he has. He also needs to read the Older Americans Act. Under the nutrition section, it states "the elderly nutrition program provides meals and socialization to older people in congregate settings." This is an opportunity for seniors to have a nutritional meal and promote socialization as the program is intended. Socialization is as important as the meal.

Mr. Dacey should remember one day he will be a senior and might appreciate the chance to socialize.

I am a taxpayer and a senior.

Dean Roberts, Havelock
