I was told I was too opinionated and outspoken when I pointed out that when the city spends our tax money faster, then the city makes us pay by raising our taxes. Well, when I read the Havelock News (March 7), my reaction was, Aha, rising blood pressure!
In 2000, I drew up a floor plan for the extension and repair of the then dark animal shelter with a leaking roof and asked for legal permission to collect volunteer donations from the public, and I collected almost $3,000 and my floor plan was used. That is why the present shelter has the extension toward the police station. However, that was to be for the animals but is taken up most by the office that is twice as large as what the officer needs for a desk and filing cabinets.
With this new officer wanting a bathroom, more kennels an euthanasia room and an area for cats, I again drew up a floor plan for three kennels and pointed out that euthanasia is done by an injection and can be done before morning opening of the shelter door to the public and rearranging storage of food and cats. A volunteer can show the dogs and cats while the officer is on a pickup, and the turnaround of incoming and outgoing animals would be much faster as the officer who is legally the only one allowed to handle the paperwork and the money would soon be back to do it. Also, the volunteer (unpaid) would save the officer time by cleaning the shelter, dishes and so on.
There are laws that state that all animals must be in full sight at all times, but the floor plans by the builders would go toward the school and cost too much. I pointed out to the board that the city tells him what to build, not him telling the city.
I was turned down, and now an expansion is up for bids again. I wonder who is drawing up what floor plan.
Now we are going to send police and public works to Carolina Pines [recreation area], and the city informed me that once we own the property, it will be Havelock. Again, the city will spend more of our tax money on two ball fields because our mayor said good kids play ball. God forbid we spend tax money on all ages and all recreation.
This city is a place of retired veterans and many of them came here and purchased a home with the usual idea that we will sell when we get orders to another base. Now, we are a city of lonely widows and widowers with nowhere to go except the senior center that I must say is hyper-modern and open five days a week. But, it’s sitting indoors and not outdoors at a recreation center for all ages with things to do on sunny days. Anywhere like that is only walking and sitting, but don’t bring your dog.
If I was not a widow living in the only home my husband and I built and a senior citizen in bad health with a life expectancy of 5 to 7 years, I would get out of Dodge and give my home away. The board runs our lives financially, or should I say ruins our lives for the tourists and ballplayers.
The Greenfield Heights church recreation center had one ball field and indoor basketball court, and bathrooms and kitchen and rooms indoors and outdoors for all ages. With foresight, the board could have moved the senior center into some of that area and traded the current senior center with the church congregation, and a beautiful financial deal could have been done.
The grant city of Havelock would be popular with us who have to pay taxes when the board spends and spends. Pay attention at election time.
