Letter: Flag should not have been lowered for Mandela

Should the president of the United States order all flags to be flown at half-mast for Mandela? I will have to say no!

Here’s why. Several years ago we had a young Army soldier killed in action from our town. Funeral services were held on MCAS Cherry Point. Not only was the flag not flown at half-mast, but it was not even flown! When I called the base about it, I was told it was Saturday and they don’t fly the flag on Saturdays.

So, if we can’t fly the flag for an American citizen that gave his life for this country, then why are we flying it for a man that is not an American citizen and did nothing for this country except to criticize us?
