Letter: Farm bill could impact laws protecting animals

Published: Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 04:34 PM.

The Farm Bill currently being discussed in Congress contains a terrifying provision that threatens to permanently harm states’ rights, workers, the environment and animals.

The King Amendment would basically strip states of the right to stop agricultural products produced in harmful ways from being sold within their borders. The bill would, for example, likely undermine laws in certain states that protect horses and prevent animal abuse in puppy mills.

State representative Mike McIntyre is on the powerful Farm Bill conference committee. I encourage him to do everything in his power to stop this outrageous amendment.
