In the Havelock News, something really got my attention on Oct. 18.
The two things that have really got my blood pressure up are the new building rules, something they have discussed for at least 10 years. Control of insects, rodents and responsibilities of owners, here it really got my attention. When a property owner [in my neighborhood] built a nice little home, only the center of the lot was cleared, and the city ordinance at the time was that owners of property must maintain the front yard in order to not be a fire hazard or draw snakes.
I went to the city manager and invited him to see the property, and he agreed that the owner should not get certified to move in until the lot was cleared and up to ordinance.
Well, they got their certificate, and I have been in front of the board twice and complained that the lot has not been cleared, and was and is full of dead branches and leaves. The answer if you remember was that the owner needs privacy and loves nature, and the mayor stated that the nature was there before the house, and the board can’t order the owner to control nature.
I then pointed out that snakes did crawl into my yard, and alcohol containers were thrown into the ditch across the yard, and that called rats and mice, and that in turn was the food for snakes, and if the city cleared the property on both sides of the street (15 feet from the yellow center line) and picked up the trash, this would help. This never has been cleared.
The second time I complained I saw in the Havelock News a city demand that the homeowners were responsible for maintaining the ditches, so I pointed out that the ditches are on city property and that’s what we have public works for and I am not on the city payroll, so I would leave the ditch up to nature. The paper now prints that the board wants to jump on the homeowners for tall weeds in ditches.
Another statement was that if they can’t afford to keep up their house, they need to move. Well, if they put up the house for sale, who is going to purchase it with all the houses for sale? Price reduced, for rent — the owner still has to pay taxes. Do the commissioners think before they talk?
They plan to have input from residents on Oct. 25. That will be as productive, as we only hear of it in the Oct. 17 Havelock News, as the public hearings they hold at the meetings when the law demands it. No one shows up, as we know that we are not heard, like when 90 percent of us told the city that Hollywood Boulevard, Creek Road and Railroad Street already had septic and water and did not want to be taken into the city system, and this just so they can collect taxes. We promptly got a letter congratulating us on being in the city and warning us that if we did not pay the minimum water usage bill, charges would be made.
I’m beginning to wonder if the board meetings are holding minutes so our board can remind themselves of what has been stated and voted on so that they themselves can stick to it.
I think the residents need to come to the monthly board meetings held on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. where the residents have five minutes each to speak, and hope the board listens to what we want and need. Then consider going out to vote for new members who give a darn about we the taxpayers. Maybe even get involved enough to run for election to replace someone on the different seats. Wake up all you residents. Let’s make some changes please.
