Editorial: Recognizing and honoring students

Published: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 07:57 PM.

But as we honor our children and our students in today’s edition, we find it hard not to think of those in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman last week took the lives of 20 innocent children during a mass shooting at an elementary school. Six members of the school’s faculty were also killed.

We’re not here to try to make sense of what happened, nor are we here to advocate for one position or another on the gun-control debate that has followed. We’re here simply to mourn with the parents, the people of Newtown and indeed an entire nation.

Few things are better than watching a child learn and grow right before our eyes. Unfortunately, we will never know what may have become of these 20 lost lives. We will never be able to recognize them for making the honor roll, playing in the band or winning a state championship. So, we recognize them now — Charlotte Bacon, Daniel Barden, Olivia Engel, Josephine Gay, Ana M. Marquez-Greene, Dylan Hockley, Madeleine F. Hsu, Catherine V. Hubbard, Chase Kowalski, Jesse Lewis, James Mattioli, Grace McDonnell, Emilie Parker, Jack Pinto, Noah Pozner, Caroline Previdi, Jessica Rekos, Avielle Richman, Benjamin Wheeler and Allison N. Wyatt.

Rest in peace.
