Organizers of Saturday’s Crystal Coast Band Classic had quite a task. They were about to host about 4,000 people just a few short hours after an intense rain that soaked everything.
Calling on the numerous volunteers, somehow they pulled off the show after just a three-hour delay. All deserve credit.
The event, which in its 13th year featured 23 high school bands, is a true gem for Havelock. It brings visitors to the area from across the state and also helps raise money for the music department at Havelock High School. For those who don’t know, Havelock has developed a reputation of having an outstanding music department. The marching band regular wins awards, the concert band matches those honors, and individual musicians routinely receive all-district and all-state honors.
That doesn’t even include the chorus department, which routinely picks up its own awards as well.
That’s why it was so good to see so many work so hard to make the competition happen on Saturday. Granted field conditions were not ideal. There were a couple of slips and more than a few dirty band and color guard uniforms.
Still, we applaud the efforts of all the musicians who participated. Between the bands and the volunteers, all hit the right notes to make the competition a true classic.
