Don't forget about Havelock basketball team

I have had the opportunity to cover all three of Havelock’s most recent state football championships. The success the Rams have had on the field — just one loss in three seasons — ranks among the best that has ever been seen in North Carolina high school football.

So, what’s a Ram fan to do when there’s no football? How about take in a basketball game.

Havelock’s boys basketball team is enjoying its most successful season in two decades, but many may not realize it.

During football season, crowds filled stadiums across the eastern part of the state. Whether at Havelock, West Carteret, in the rain at White Oak or in Raleigh for the state championship game, fans flocked to watch the Rams play football.

However, on Friday at Havelock High for the basketball game, bleachers were comparatively empty, and that is a shame.

After all, this basketball team is on the verge of a conference championship. The Rams are riding a 13-game winning streak and haven’t lost a game since the hoops-playing members of the football team stepped on the hardwood.

Against Jacksonville on Friday night, the Rams put on a performance that was worthy of any NBA team. Three-pointers flew through the air. Players drove the lane and made acrobatic moves to get to the basket. There was even a slam dunk. And, all of that occurred in the first quarter alone.
