A debate that can't be settled

They could not have been much older than 7 or 8. Yet there they were, wearing their Havelock jerseys with pride.

The two Pop Warner players were in the middle of a debate on the sidelines during their game, one that when you’re 7 or 8 is of the utmost importance — which athlete they wanted to be.

But there was a twist. This wasn’t an argument about LeBron James or Kobe Bryant, or Derek Jeter or Miguel Cabrera, or even Adrian Peterson or Robert Griffin III.

When it came down to whom they wanted to be, the choice was between a pair of Havelock High football players, Pharoh Cooper or Derrell Scott.

Cooper graduated last season, leading the Rams to the state 3A championship. The most valuable player of last year’s state championship game holds the single-season record for all-purpose yards at Havelock. He is now playing at South Carolina.

Scott is the school’s all-time leading rusher. He was the offensive MVP in last year’s state title game, and he has nearly every major college football program in the country after his services.

After discussion and debate, the two settled on Cooper because Cooper was a quarterback. Sorry Derrell.
