A Carteret County man remains in jail on a $1 million bond for charges of rape and kidnapping.
Steven George O’Neill, 55, of Newport was arrested by the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office on Friday and is charged with second degree forcible rape and first degree kidnapping.
Deputies were called to Atlantic Village Mobile Home Park on Tom Mann Road in Newport on Friday in response to a call of a woman in distress, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
A woman said she was hiding in the mobile home park after escaping from a locked room, according to the release.
She told law enforcement that while visiting O’Neill, he allegedly refused to let her leave, stole her phone and locked her in a room with a deadbolt, keeping her there for four days while she was repeatedly raped and assaulted, according to the release.
Deputies took O’Neill into custody at 515 Tom Mann Road, Lot 68, in Newport, according to the release, and the woman was treated by paramedics. O’Neill was then taken to Carteret Health Care for assessment while under a law enforcement escort.
