Bright Ideas grants: Teachers may apply for grants from South River Electric Membership Corp., which expects to award $50,000 for classroom projects and materials through the Bright Ideas Grant Program. Teachers from K-12 public schools can apply for as much as $2,500. The application deadline is Sept. 19. 2. Hawaiian Nights: Spring Lake Outpost is hosting the event Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight. It includes a sunset paddle down the river followed by a pig roast, limbo contest, raffle giveaways and other activities. The price is $20 for food and beer only; $50 for a kayak/canoe rental and food and beer; $30 for those who bring their own boat for the river trip and food and beer. Spring Lake Outpost is at 1530 N. 3. A Star-Spangled Kind of Day: Celebrate Independence Day early at Cape Fear Botanical Garden. The event is Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. and includes the band Open Road playing classic rock cover tunes from 1 to 4 p.m., bounce houses, lawn games, crafts and more. Food trucks Boss Ross Dogs, 507 Empanadas and Bubba & Finn’s Tropical Treats are scheduled to be there as well. Admission is $5 for adults and children over 6. Garden members and children 5 and under are free. This is a rain or shine event. The garden is at 536 N. Eastern Blvd.
