A 23-year-old man has been charged with the sexual assault of a 64-year-old Uber driver.
Jeremy Ryan Callaway, of 131 Hunting Wood Lane, was arrested Monday following an investigation into the early Saturday morning crime and booked on one charge each of felony first degree kidnapping and misdemeanor sexual battery as well as two charges of felony first degree sexual offense.
He was jailed on a $2 million bond.
According to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy on patrol came upon a woman parked in her car in the Riverdale community at about 5 a.m. Saturday.
“He saw she was upset,” Capt. John Whitfield said, “and when he opened her door she told him she’d been sexually assaulted.”
The woman, who lives in Carteret County, said she responded to an Uber call to pick up three men at the Bayside Restaurant in Havelock. She took the first two home, after which Callaway then forced her to drive to Flanners Beach where she was assaulted, Whitfield said.
After the assault, he made her drop him off in his own neighborhood, Whitfield said.
The victim was treated and released at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
