Deadline for Christmas parade grand marshal nominations nears

Havelock gets into the holiday spirit beginning this weekend as the annual tree lighting kicks off a variety of activities.

The Havelock Appearance Commission has scheduled its annual Christmas Tree Lighting event from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Havelock City Park.

The free event includes hot chocolate, hot cider, cookies, Santa’s parlor, Christmas crafts including cookie and card decorating, balloon animals and music from local school groups. Food vendors will be on hand for purchases.

A collection of nonperishable food for the Havelock-Cherry Point Ministerial Outreach Food Pantry will also be taken.

The tree lighting concludes the event at dusk.

For more information on the tree lighting, call Havelock City Hall at 444-6400.

While the Havelock Christmas Parade isn’t until Dec. 16, a couple of deadlines for the event come up next week.

The deadline to nominate a person as the parade’s grand marshal is on Tuesday. Nominations will be taken at the Havelock Recreation Center off Fontana Boulevard in Havelock.

The deadline to submit an application to participate in the parade is Monday. The theme for the parade is the “Island of Misfit Toys.”

Applications are available for download online at www.havelocknc.us/christmas-parade. Applications then must be signed and delivered to either the Havelock Parks and Recreation Department or Havelock City Hall by the end of the business day on Monday.

The 47th annual Havelock Christmas Parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Dec. 16 along East Main Street.

For more information on the parade or grand marshal nominations, call the Havelock Parks and Recreation Department at 444-6429.

Another deadline arrives next week — the deadline to purchase tickets for the annual Christmas Dinner at the Havelock Senior Center.

The event, put on by the Havelock Senior Advisory Board, is scheduled for Dec. 8 at the senior center. Doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. A traditional Christmas meal including turkey, ham and holiday sides will be served.

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the senior center, located at 103 Trader Ave., between West Main Street and Miller Boulevard. The deadline to purchase tickets is Tuesday. No tickets will be sold at the door.

The event includes the announcement of the grand marshal for the Christmas parade.

For more information on the dinner, call the senior center at 444-6445.
