Four candidates running for two seats

Havelock residents who want to determine the city’s leaders for the next four years will get that chance at the polls on Tuesday.

Election Day for Havelock’s mayor and two Board of Commissioners seats is set for Tuesday.

The city’s contested race involved the Board of Commissioners. Four candidates are running for those two seats — incumbents George Corbin and Brenda Wilson, and challengers James Kohr and Jimmy Sanders.

Corbin, a Marine Corps veteran, was appointed to the board in 2015 to fill the unexpired seat of Jim Stuart, who stepped down due to health reasons. He had previously run unsuccessfully for the board but received the most votes of anyone not elected, clearing the way for his appointment in 2015.

Wilson, who was elected as commissioner in 2013, is a local realtor who currently serves on the Craven Community College Board of Trustees and the Committee of 100.

Kohr is seeking his first term on the board. He serves as the pastor of Freedom Baptist Church in Havelock.

Sanders, a familiar face in Havelock politics, has previously served as a city commissioner and most recently served as mayor before losing the seat to Will Lewis in the 2013 election. The retiree is a frequent volunteer with Cherry Point United Methodist Church

The mayoral seat is also up for election, but Lewis, the incumbent mayor, is running unopposed.

Election Day voting on Tuesday takes place at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center. Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Those voting on Election Day must be registered to vote in the city of Havelock.

However, those who missed the voter registration deadline can register and vote on the same day during the early voting period, assuming they have been residents of Havelock for more than 30 days.

Early voting is scheduled for today and Saturday at the Craven County Board of Elections office in the Craven County Administration Building on Craven Street in downtown New Bern. Times are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Board of Elections office.

There is no early voting site in Havelock.
