One mayoral, four commissioner candidates have filed so far
Those interested in running for mayor or commissioner in Havelock have until noon Friday to get their names on the November ballot.
Candidate filing for the Nov. 7 election ends on Friday at the Craven County Board of Elections inside the Craven County Administration building in downtown New Bern.
As of press time, only incumbent Will Lewis had filed to run for mayor of Havelock in the upcoming election, though four people have filed to run for the two available seats on the Board of Commissioners.
Incumbent commissioners Brenda Wilson and George Corbin have both filed to keep their seats on the board, though two challengers have also filed, including Jim Kohr and former Havelock mayor and town commissioner Jimmy Sanders Sr.
Sanders was mayor of Havelock until he lost to Lewis in the 2013 election for mayor.
The mayor and two board seats are all four-year terms.
Those interested in filing to run for either mayor or commissioner will have to pay a $5 filing fee.
Two of the five First Craven Sanitary District seats are also available in Craven County, including a vacancy and the seat now held by Cicero W. “Billy” Gaskins Jr.
As for voters, the voter registration deadline is Oct. 13. Early, one-stop absentee voting is scheduled to begin Oct. 19 and run through Nov. 4. The last day to request an absentee vote by mail is Oct. 31. Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. for the election on Nov. 7.
