Cannon Day, fireworks part of weekend events

1. Cannon Day

Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach has scheduled Cannon Day from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The event includes how Civil War cannons were loaded, aimed and fired. Demonstrations are scheduled for 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

2. Atlantic Beach fireworks

Atlantic Beach will celebrate a kickoff to summer with a fireworks show at 9 p.m. Saturday along the boardwalk at the Circle beach access.

Residents can bring chairs and blankets, but pets and glass containers are prohibited.

3. Pepsi store party

The New Bern Birthplace of Pepsi, 256 Middle St., has scheduled a 150th birthday celebration to honor the inventor of Pepsi, Caleb Bradham.

The event will feature a birthday cake and nickel Caleb’s Kola, while the visitor center will have some special treats and Pepsi products to enjoy.

4. Shuey to perform

Bluesman Arthur Shuey from Wilmington is scheduled to perform Friday at Trent River Coffee Company in New Bern.

Accompanied by Simon Spalding and other local musicians, Shuey will sing, play mouth harp, and share his lifelong love and knowledge of blues music.

Tickets are $10, available at the door. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts an hour later.

5. Aquarium bird show

The Bird’s Eye View Bird Show is scheduled to begin Saturday at the N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

Those attending will have the chance to learn about pelicans, owls, vultures and other birds as well as to see them up close. The birds in the show have injuries or conditions that prevent their release into the wild.
