The new county health clinic is scheduled to open Monday in Havelock.

The Craven County Community Health Center will open its doors at 8 a.m. at the Westbrooke Shopping Center next to Planet Fitness.

The clinic is designed to serve residents of Havelock and eastern Craven County. Some eastern Craven County residents faced a 45-minute to one-hour drive to the county health department’s lone clinic in New Bern.

“We are pleased to be able to provide residents in the Havelock and/or Harlowe area with primary care services they need to stay healthy,” said Dawn McCabe, Craven Community Health Center family nurse practitioner.

A two-year, $650,000 annual federal grant, along with $82,000 from Craven County in startup funds, helped pay for the creation of the clinic. Craven County will pay $80,000 annual to lease the 4,000 square-foot space in the shopping complex.

Work crews spent the first four months of the year renovating the open space and creating separate offices. Furniture and other items were being moved in on Tuesday.

The goal is for the clinic to serve about 3,000 patients. Patients with or without insurance can make the health clinic their primary care provider. Services the clinic will provide include sick appointments, physical exams, chronic disease management, labs, referrals to diagnostics, dental care and specialty care.

In addition to offering primary care, the clinic will provide Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to both military and non-military families.

“By opening this clinic, we will have a presence in Havelock and/or Harlowe to provide much needed health care services with a sliding fee scale,” said Scott Harrelson, the Craven County Health Director.

Hours for the clinic will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments can be made by calling 444-1533.

A formal grand opening ceremony is being planned for May.
